Finished Oak - H:16" x L:38" x D:12" - December, 2001
This is a "table-top" piece, meant to be displayed on a polished table or similar surface. Sculpted in the winter of 2001 from a large oak donated to the artist.
Artistic Go-pee: We used to go to the beach almost every day when I lived in Ibiza (for you Americans, that's one of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain) back in the 80s. Many people we saw there looked this way - slashed off at the chest in a mirror of ocean, water trailing from their fingertips like wings. I particularly noticed one guy with a Rolex which would flash in the sun when he swam. I have done this guy several times, in paintings and sculpture, watercolor, charcoal... I can't seem to get the image out of my head.
This idea also ties in with another theme I like, a "fragment in a fragment" - in this case a fragment of time in a fragment of figure. More natural than my usual "fragments" since this is the way the swimmer actually appeared in the water. Hoo-hah, what an explanation!
