Moon Head
Finished Found Wood 1998 - Private Collection, Los Angeles, CA
Ahtsy Fahtsy:
This is the only piece I ever did where I followed the existing contours of a piece of found wood. I spotted this large chunk near the bike path by the Hudson River in NYC & immediately loved the form of it. I did shape and smoothe it a bit, so it wasn't like I didn't do any work at all - but basically this piece created itself.
It's not the way I usually operate; the convoluted curvatures of nature are mostly too busy to suit my particular style - there's probably some kind of Puritan work ethic guilt bullcrapola in there somewhere too. I don't know why I should care but for whatever reason I seldom feel comfortable leaving nature to her own devices as far as sculpture goes.
