Finished Oak - 52" x 12" x 12"- Feb, 1999
Artist's Comment:
This piece is a riff on or homage to those kitschy sculptures that were part of the suburban Polyonesian craze which swept America in the mid-50s, the kind of sculptures that went with hula-print skirts, Mai-Tai cocktails and back porch luaus. My parents had some "art" like that in the living room when I was a very young kid... esthetically questionable but I really loved it. Maybe that's why I wanna mythologize it - my tastes have changed a lot since then but I remember how amazingly cool it looked to me.
Carved from a beam from that turn-of-the-century mansion in Manhattan mentioned several times before; wood is over 100 years old.
